2025-02-21 / Weekend in WACO
FRIDAY
I dropped Ruby & Zeppy off at Dogtopia for the weekend, picked Olive up from school early, packed up the car and headed for Waco, Texas for the weekend. We rented a cabin, the White Rock at Live Oak Lake for Friday and Saturday nights.
But first, snacks. Walker and Olive opted for the go-to sour gummy something-or-others, and I went with dark chocolate espresso waffle cones, and a 2nd bag of berry licorice because I’m disgusting. The drive took us about 2.5 hours and I think we pulled in around 4:30.
We arrived, unpacked, put some Pork, Mac & Cheese in the oven, and opened up a bottle of Crunchy Roastie. I forget how good this wine is!
While we waited for dinner to heatup, we played Why Are You Like This?. This game is a blast and also made me feel like an idiot, thank you to the aforementioned wine. Highly suggested.
After dinner and games, it was time to retire, Walker and I watched some Brooklyn 99 on my phone and zonked out.
SATURDAY
Woke up Saturday morning and went straight for the coffee pot and lemon cake, while Olive bee-lined to the hot tub.
We decided to head out for some adventure, lunch, and more coffee, and thought we’d check out the town that Chip and Joanna built, ie downtown Waco. We walked by Magnolia Press and dipped in for some energy. Walker had an espresso, I had a latte, and Olive went with a cream soda. We walked through the attached Magnolia Home store, used the Magnolia Bathroom, flushed the Magnolia Toilets, you get the picture… Regardless, the Silo District as it’s called is cool, and fascinating to see an entire town revitalized by two people and their vision.
We never did make it inside the Bakery however, lines around the corner, so we grabbed some hot dogs at a little trailer called Frenchies and enjoyed the vibe. On our way out, we stopped into a couple of boutiques, Olive bought a snake bracelet, and Walker and I bought nothing because we’re very responsible grown-ups. One last trip to M Doughnuts and we headed back to the cabin, satisfied that we did our duty to site-see.
Back at the cabin, we tossed the $22 bag of pellets in the fire pit to warm up a bit (great fire! but not worth the 2 hour smoke show afterwards), and thoroughly enjoyed the bourbon/peach concoction Walker mixed up for the trip. A great day all around!
SUNDAY
Check-out day, boo! Walker door-dashed some McGriddle Chicken Eggamuffins for us, man, she really is the best. We ate breakfast, read, gave the Hot Tub one last visit and began packing up.
oh, and final tallies on the wildlife:
- wild hogs!
- road runners!
- vultures
- hawks
- deer
- cows, horses, goats etc…
It was a short trip, but peaceful, would totally come back. I’m ready for the next one, where to go?
